Ship Security Guards
Matching Nationalities, Complementary Skills
Ship Security Guards (SSGs) must fulfil three roles:
- Protection against terrorism and external attack.
- Shipboard policing.
- Customer service.
In our eighteen years experience of providing Ship Security Guards to the cruise industry, we have found that balancing these three roles is hard. The skills they require differ widely and are not easily found in any one individual or from one national source. Combining individuals possessing the right attributes into a team that can function smoothly while under acute stress is even harder, but it remains the unavoidable ultimate goal.
For this reason, we have now expanded our reach beyond our traditional recruiting ground of Nepal to include India and Myanmar. To the traditional martial skills of our Gurkha crew we have added the policing experience of Petty Officers from the Indian Navy and Guards from Myanmar who possess warm customer service skills that stem from Burmese culture coupled with the English language skills that Burma's education system has never lost.
The new concept was first trialled in 2013 and has proved that culturally, ethnically and linguistically the mix of Gurkha, Indian and Myanmar Guards makes for a very cohesive combination.
